Small errors can disqualify you. Here are the mistakes recruiters see every day—and how to avoid them.
1. Typos and Grammatical Errors
Spell-check isn't enough. Read your resume out loud and ask someone else to review. "Detail-oriented" with a typo undermines the claim.
2. Generic, One-Size-Fits-All Resume
Sending the same resume to every job shows lack of effort. Tailor at least your summary and top bullets.
3. No Quantified Achievements
Vague bullets ("Responsible for sales") don't stand out. Add numbers: "Exceeded sales targets by 20%."
4. Poor Formatting
Tables, columns, and fancy design can break ATS. Use simple, clean structure.
5. Unprofessional Email
Use a professional email address. Partyguy123@email.com doesn't inspire confidence.
6. Irrelevant Information
Hobbies, unrelated jobs from 15 years ago, and personal details take space from what matters.
7. Lying
Fabricated degrees, titles, or dates will surface. Background checks are common.
8. Too Long or Too Short
One page for early career, two for experienced. Don't pad or over-compress.
9. Missing Contact Info
Double-check phone and email. A wrong digit means no callback.
10. Weak Summary
A boring or cliché summary sets a weak tone. Lead with impact and specificity.
