How to Write a Resume for a Career Change

Switching industries or roles? Your resume needs to reframe your experience so hiring managers see the connection, not the disconnect.

Lead With a Targeted Summary

Open with a summary that bridges your past and future: "Marketing professional with 8 years of B2B experience transitioning to product management, with proven skills in stakeholder communication and data-driven decision-making."

Reframe Your Bullets

Translate your achievements into the language of your target role. If moving from sales to customer success, emphasize relationship building, retention, and satisfaction—not just revenue.

Highlight Transferable Skills

Create a skills section that aligns with the new role. If you're moving into tech, highlight any projects, tools, or certifications—even if they came from side work.

Consider a Hybrid or Functional Format

For big pivots, a skills-based or hybrid resume can emphasize relevant abilities over chronology. Use it when your job titles don't obviously match the target role.

Address the Change Directly

In your summary or a brief note, acknowledge the transition. It shows intentionality and confidence rather than confusion.
